Set beside the iconic 108 chortens and framed by panoramic Himalayan peaks, the festival presents dramatic masked dances and artistic performances created to honor the brave soldiers who defended the nation. This journey also takes you through Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro, where you’ll visit timeless sites such as Punakha Dzong and the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Blending the energy of the festival with Bhutan’s cultural treasures and spiritual landmarks, this tour offers a deeply enriching and memorable Bhutanese experience.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Transfer to Thimphu

Upon landing at Paro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and driven to Thimphu along a picturesque valley road (about 1.5 hours). After settling in, begin your sightseeing with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, an important spiritual landmark for local residents. Continue to the impressive Buddha Dordenma, which offers sweeping views over the capital. A stop at the National Library introduces you to Bhutan’s historic manuscripts and literary treasures. Spend the evening walking through Thimphu’s lively streets and browsing local handicraft stalls. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: Cultural Discovery of Thimphu

Devote your second day to exploring Thimphu’s artistic and cultural identity. Start at the Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students train in Bhutan’s traditional 13 arts. Visit the Folk Heritage Museum to experience the lifestyle of rural Bhutan, followed by the Textile Museum, which showcases the country’s remarkable weaving traditions. In the afternoon, tour Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body. If it’s a weekend, visit the bustling Centenary Farmers’ Market to see local produce and crafts. Day 3: Druk Wangyel Festival at Dochula Pass

Begin early and drive to Dochula Pass, known for its panoramic Himalayan views and 108 memorial chortens. Here you will attend the Druk Wangyel Festival, a one-of-a-kind celebration honoring Bhutan’s military victories and national unity. Enjoy a full day of vibrant mask dances, stirring performances, and unique cultural displays in an unforgettable high-altitude setting. After the festival, continue to Punakha (approx. 2.5 hours). Day 4: Discovering Punakha

Start the day with a gentle walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the well-known Temple of Fertility. Day 5: Punakha to Paro

Day 6: Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) Hike

Today you’ll hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside high above the valley. The trek, though challenging, offers breathtaking views and a deep sense of accomplishment upon reaching the monastery. After returning to the base, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest sacred temples. Conclude the day with a special farewell dinner featuring local flavors. Overnight in Paro.

Day 7: Departure from Paro

What is the SDF and how is it used?

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily levy paid by visitors to support Bhutan’s development. Since the kingdom first opened its doors in 1974, guests have played a critical role in our country’s growth. The SDF is collected by the national exchequer and funds are allocated to various projects that create long-term, sustainable opportunities for the Bhutanese people, through free healthcare, education and training, upskilling the tourism and hospitality industry, improved infrastructure, environmental preservation and conservation, cultural preservation programmes and initiatives that support local businesses and economies. The SDF is also a vital means of maintaining the exceptional forest cover and carbon-neutrality for which our small nation is world-renowned and globally critical. The SDF also helps us to ensure that we can continue to offer guests tranquillity and an intimate experience. A correctly input visa application can take up to five days to process.

How much is the SDF?

The SDF is USD 100 per night for adults from all countries except for India. Children aged between 6 years and who have not yet turned 12 are eligible to pay USD 50 per night. Children who have not yet turned 6 years old do not have to pay any SDF. The SDF for Indian nationals (showing a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card) is Nu. 1,200 (or the equivalent amount in Indian rupees) per person, per night. Children aged between 6 years and who have not yet turned 12 are eligible to pay Nu./INR 600 per night. Children who have not yet turned 6 years old do not have to pay any SDF.
