Bhutan Visa Information
All international visitors require a visa before travelling to Bhutan, except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, who follow a separate entry process.
Visitors can apply for a Bhutan visa online, or the application can be arranged through a registered tour operator or hotel. When you book your trip with Happy Trips, we can assist you with the visa process and provide guidance on the required documents.
Sustainable Development Fee
As part of Bhutan’s tourism policy, visitors are required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee, commonly known as the SDF. This fee supports Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and national development.
The SDF is charged per person, per night of stay in Bhutan. Concessionary rates may apply for children.
A one-time, non-refundable visa application fee is also payable during the visa application process.
Documents Required for Visa Application
To apply for a Bhutan visa, you will generally need the following:
- A clear digital copy of your valid passport
- A recent passport-size photograph
- Confirmed arrival and departure dates
- Travel details or tour itinerary
- Payment details for visa and SDF fees
- Travel insurance, recommended for safety and unexpected situations
We recommend preparing your documents in advance to avoid delays during the application process.
Visa Application Process
The Bhutan visa application process is simple and can be completed online. The general steps include:
- Create an online visa application account
- Submit your passport and travel details
- Confirm your arrival and departure dates
- Pay the visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee
- Wait for the application to be reviewed and approved
Once approved, your visa clearance will be issued before your arrival in Bhutan.
Visitors from India
Indian nationals do not require a visa to enter Bhutan. Instead, they are required to obtain an entry permit.
Indian visitors can apply for a permit online before travelling or at the point of entry. However, applying in advance is strongly recommended to avoid long waiting times upon arrival.
Indian visitors should carry valid travel documents, such as a passport or voter identity card, along with a passport-size photograph.
Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives
Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives require a visa, but they follow a simplified process similar to Indian visitors. They can apply online before travel or complete the process upon arrival, where applicable.
We recommend arranging the visa or permit before your trip for a smoother travel experience.
