The Jomolhari Yaktsa Trek is equally stunning alternative to the full Jomolhari Trek, offering spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari, high mountain passes, and pristine alpine landscapes within a more manageable duration. This moderate-to-challenging trek combines dramatic Himalayan scenery with cultural encounters, passing through remote villages, yak-herding settlements, and flower-filled meadows. Its highlight is the panoramic viewpoint of Jomolhari, often considered one of Bhutan’s most breathtaking mountain vistas. Perfect for trekkers seeking a rewarding high-altitude adventure without the longer commitment, the Jomolhari Yaktsa Trek delivers a rich blend of nature, culture, and wilderness.
Arrive at Paro International Airport and be welcomed by the serene beauty of the Paro Valley. After settling in, visit the historic Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum, where you’ll get your first glimpse into Bhutan’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. Begin your acclimatization with a rewarding hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest, dramatically perched on a cliff at 3,120 meters. The climb offers stunning views of the valley and an excellent introduction to Bhutan’s spiritual landscape. Return to Paro in the afternoon and enjoy a peaceful night before the trek begins.
Drive to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, the starting point of your trek, and begin your hike through lush forests and picturesque river valleys. After 5–6 hours of gentle walking, arrive at Shana (2,850 meters) and settle into camp surrounded by tranquil nature.
Continue trekking along the Pa Chu River, passing through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests. This is a long yet scenic day, taking 7–8 hours as you gradually ascend to Soi Thangthangkha (3,750 meters). Enjoy the stillness of the mountains as you camp for the night.
Trek toward Jangothang, the base camp of Mount Jomolhari. After about 5–6 hours on the trail, arrive at one of Bhutan’s most breathtaking campsites, framed by sweeping alpine vistas and the towering peak of Jomolhari. Spend the evening soaking in the mountain atmosphere.
Take a full day to acclimatize at Jangothang. Choose an exploratory hike to Tsophu Lake or toward the Jomolhari Glacier, both offering spectacular views. Return to camp for a restful night in preparation for the high passes ahead.
Cross the high Bhonte La Pass (4,890 meters), enjoying dramatic Himalayan scenery before descending into the Yaktsa Valley. Today’s trek lasts 7–8 hours, ending at the peaceful Yaktsa campsite (3,800 meters), surrounded by open meadows and mountains.
Climb toward Tagulun La Pass (4,520 meters) and enjoy panoramic views before descending into the picturesque Thombu Shong Valley. After a 5–6 hour trek, set up camp at 4,180 meters and enjoy the calm alpine environment.
Begin your final trekking day by crossing Thombu La Pass (4,380 meters) before making a long descent to Shana. From there, continue hiking to Drukgyel Dzong, where your vehicle will be waiting. Drive back to Paro and relax for the evening, celebrating the successful completion of your trek.

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily levy paid by visitors to support Bhutan’s development. Since the kingdom first opened its doors in 1974, guests have played a critical role in our country’s growth. The SDF is collected by the national exchequer and funds are allocated to various projects that create long-term, sustainable opportunities for the Bhutanese people, through free healthcare, education and training, upskilling the tourism and hospitality industry, improved infrastructure, environmental preservation and conservation, cultural preservation programmes and initiatives that support local businesses and economies. The SDF is also a vital means of maintaining the exceptional forest cover and carbon-neutrality for which our small nation is world-renowned and globally critical. The SDF also helps us to ensure that we can continue to offer guests tranquillity and an intimate experience. A correctly input visa application can take up to five days to process.
The SDF is USD 100 per night for adults from all countries except for India. Children aged between 6 years and who have not yet turned 12 are eligible to pay USD 50 per night.
