The Druk Path Trek is one of Bhutan’s most popular and accessible high-altitude journeys, connecting Paro and Thimphu through a scenic network of ancient trails, alpine lakes, and ridgeline campsites. Over just a few days, trekkers experience dramatic contrasts—from blue pine forests and quiet villages to wide-open highlands dotted with yak herder camps. Crystal-clear lakes such as Jimilang Tsho and Simkotra Tsho reflect the surrounding Himalayan peaks, creating some of the trek’s most iconic views. The route is moderately challenging but suitable for most active travelers, making it an ideal introduction to trekking in Bhutan. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping vistas, pristine nature, and a blend of cultural and natural beauty that captures the heart of the Bhutanese Himalayas

Day 1: Arrival in Paro

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where your guide will warmly welcome you and accompany you to your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum, gaining your first insight into Bhutan’s rich culture and history. In the evening, relax at your hotel and prepare for the trek ahead.

Day 2: Paro – Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Begin your Bhutan adventure with a hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), spectacularly perched on a cliff high above the Paro Valley. After descending, enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure in Paro, making any final preparations for your trek starting the next day.

Day 3: Paro to Jele Dzong

Start your trek with a steady ascent through tranquil pine forests toward Jele Dzong. The journey takes about 4–5 hours and rewards you with panoramic views of the Paro Valley. Set up camp near Jele Dzong (3,450m) and enjoy breathtaking vistas, including a distant glimpse of Mount Jomolhari.

Day 4: Jele Dzong to Jangchulakha

Trek onward to Jangchulakha, following a scenic trail that winds through thick alpine forests and rhododendron groves. Clearings along the way offer beautiful views of the Himalayan range. Today’s walk takes about 3–4 hours before camping at Jangchulakha (3,770m).

Day 5: Jangchulakha to Jimilang Tsho

Continue toward the stunning alpine lake of Jimilang Tsho. The path includes several gentle ascents and descents, leading you through open ridges and wooded patches over 4–5 hours. Camp beside the serene lake at 3,870m, known for its crystal waters and trout.

Day 6: Jimilang Tsho to Simkotra Tsho

Proceed to Simkotra Tsho, trekking across rocky slopes and landscapes dotted with dwarf rhododendrons. The 4–5-hour journey brings you to another pristine mountain lake, where you will camp at 4,110m, surrounded by dramatic high-altitude scenery.

Day 7: Simkotra Tsho to Phajoding

Today’s trek leads you over several scenic mountain passes, offering sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley and distant Himalayan peaks. After 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Phajoding (3,600m), where you will camp near the historic monastery.

Day 8: Phajoding to Thimphu

Descend from Phajoding through a beautiful forest trail, taking roughly 3–4 hours to reach Thimphu. Check into your hotel and spend the afternoon discovering the capital’s highlights, including the National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma, and Tashichho Dzong.

Day 9: Thimphu Sightseeing – Drive to Paro

Begin the day with more cultural visits in Thimphu, such as the Folk Heritage Museum and the Handicrafts Emporium. In the afternoon, drive back to Paro (about 1.5 hours). Settle into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing final evening.

What is the SDF and how is it used?

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily levy paid by visitors to support Bhutan’s development. Since the kingdom first opened its doors in 1974, guests have played a critical role in our country’s growth. The SDF is collected by the national exchequer and funds are allocated to various projects that create long-term, sustainable opportunities for the Bhutanese people, through free healthcare, education and training, upskilling the tourism and hospitality industry, improved infrastructure, environmental preservation and conservation, cultural preservation programmes and initiatives that support local businesses and economies. The SDF is also a vital means of maintaining the exceptional forest cover and carbon-neutrality for which our small nation is world-renowned and globally critical. The SDF also helps us to ensure that we can continue to offer guests tranquillity and an intimate experience. A correctly input visa application can take up to five days to process.

How much is the SDF?

The SDF is USD 100 per night for adults from all countries except for India. Children aged between 6 years and who have not yet turned 12 are eligible to pay USD 50 per night. Children who have not yet turned 6 years old do not have to pay any SDF. The SDF for Indian nationals (showing a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card) is Nu. 1,200 (or the equivalent amount in Indian rupees) per person, per night. Children aged between 6 years and who have not yet turned 12 are eligible to pay Nu./INR 600 per night. Children who have not yet turned 6 years old do not have to pay any SDF.
